Ten Best Tips In Choosing Your Scuba Diving Instructor

Imagine you’ve been saving for months, maybe years, for your dream holiday in the Maldives, Mexico, Malta, or any number of other amazing diving destinations around the world. Perhaps this is your honeymoon, an anniversary trip, or maybe it’s just something you’ve wanted to do for a long time and it’s time for a break from your everyday life. Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

If you’re keen to experience scuba diving as part of your holiday, you’ll want to make sure you do it right. The last thing you’ll want is to waste any of your precious time away from home – not to mention the money it cost you – learning how to dive, which is why it’s often best to learn at least the basics at home. If you’re searching for the ideal scuba diving instructor, here are ten tips to help you choose.

Recommendations

One of the best things you can do when it comes to choosing a diving instructor is to ask friends and family for recommendations. In this way, you can be sure you’re choosing someone who can teach and who has the proper techniques. If you don’t know anyone who has tried diving, you can always ask on social media, although these less personal recommendations will require more research.

The Courses

Always ask what courses are offered when you’re looking for a scuba diving instructor for your holiday or honeymoon. Ensure they offer the courses that will allow you to dive in the way you want to once you get to your diving destination.

Prices

Although it would be nice not to have to worry about pricing, it’s a fact of life that you’re going to need to find out how much you’ll be charged. Make sure you choose an instructor that suits your budget, but that also offers value for money.

Time With You

You really don’t want an instructor that isn’t with you at all times; they must be for safety and so you get good instruction. If they’re only going to give you tips and then leave you to it, that’s no good.

Experience

Your potential instructor doesn’t have to have been to all the most incredible diving destinations in Mexico or the Maldives to be great, but they will need to have plenty of dive time under their belts to give you the best learning experience.

Why?

Ask the instructor why they love diving so much and what it is that makes it so special for them. It’s good to find an instructor with plenty of passion for what they do, as they’ll give you an excellent lesson.

Watch A Class

Before you get into the water, ask if you can observe a class they’re giving. In this way, you’ll get an idea of their teaching technique and whether it’s for you or not.

References

A good, confident, competent instructor should be able to give you plenty of references when you ask for them. These people can talk to you about their own experience with the instructor and can be helpful.

How Big Is The Class?

You’ll know what you’re comfortable with in terms of how many people you want to learn with, so this is something to consider. Remember, though, if you are in a big class, you might not get the personal attention you need when learning to dive.

Do They Dive For Fun?

This is a good question. If your scuba diving instructor dives for fun, they are likely to be much more interested in ensuring you pass your course. If this is just a job for them, they won’t be quite so invested.
